The Science of Reading, at a Kitchen Table, in 2026
Schools spent five years arguing about phonics. Homeschoolers still have to sit down tomorrow. Here is the version that fits a six-year-old and a parent who is not a reading specialist.

I still get emails that say "we tried sight words for a year and she guesses from the picture." The picture was doing the work. The letters were decoration.
The science of reading is not a brand. It is a pile of evidence that most children need systematic phonics, not a hope that they will absorb English by being read to and looking at a word wall. Being read to still matters. It is not the decoding engine.
What you actually do between 9:00 and 9:25
- Two minutes of review: last week's graphemes.
- Eight minutes of new sound-spelling, with the child saying it, writing it, reading it in a couple of words.
- Ten minutes of a decodable text that only asks for sounds they have been taught. If the book needs "said" and you have not taught it as an exception yet, pencil it in and tell them. Do not pretend it is decodable.
- Five minutes of you reading something with actual story in it, because a diet of "Pat sat" will make everyone mean.
That is the lesson. Not an hour. Not a laminated centre.
What to stop buying
Three-cueing posters. "Look at the picture and think what would make sense" as the main strategy. Random sight-word packs of 200 before the child can blend. Apps that celebrate guessing.
A homeschool advantage is you can ignore a district's old boxed programme. The disadvantage is the marketplace will sell you the same guessing with better illustrations.

Our early reading is a synthetic phonics sequence in FYP and KG, then fluency and spelling patterns in Grade 1 English. It is not the only legitimate sequence. It is a sequence. If you already have one you trust, keep it. Do not run two phonics programmes in the same week and then decide the child is confused. The child is receiving two maps to the same town.
Older beginners
If your child is eight and still guessing, do not put them in Grade 3 chapter books to "catch up socially" while decoding is broken. That is how you get a nine-year-old who hates books and a parent who thinks they failed. Go back to blending. Short sessions. Decodables that do not look like baby books if you can find them. Pride matters. So does the code.
The trend piece in US and UK education media this year is still phonics. For once the trend and the kitchen table agree. Use that rare alignment and sit down tomorrow, even if the fridge is loud.
