California Homeschooling: The Private School Affidavit Without the Panic

California parents hear "affidavit" and think they are about to be cross-examined. The Private School Affidavit is a form. You file it online with the California Department of Education, usually between 1 October and 15 October, if you are operating as a private school in your home.

That is the main path. It is not the only path. Some families enrol in a public independent study or a charter. Some use a private satellite programme. This article is for the family who wants to run the school themselves and not outsource the legal wrapper.

Who is the instructor

On the affidavit you name an instructor. For a home-based private school that is usually a parent. California wants the instructor to be capable of teaching. It does not require a teaching credential for a parent in this setting the way a classroom job would. Internet threads will argue this into the ground. Read the CDE's current affidavit instructions the week you file, not a 2019 blog comment.

If you have a child with an IEP and you are leaving a district, talk to someone who does special education exits in California before you file anything in a mood. That is a different fork.

What you keep after you click submit

The affidavit is the easy hour. The year is the records:

• Attendance. California private schools keep an attendance register. A homeschool attendance register can be a spreadsheet. It cannot be your memory in June.
• Courses offered. A list. English, maths, science, social studies, and whatever else you actually do.
• Instructor qualifications as you stated them.

October always arrives faster than you think

Families who start in August forget the October window because they are still arguing about pencils. Put 1 October in the calendar the day you decide to homeschool. File early in the window. Do not file in November because a Facebook group said "it's fine." Late filing is how you get a winter of low-grade dread.

Charter vs affidavit

A homeschool charter can look easier: someone else holds the public-school envelope. It also comes with vendor lists, work samples on their schedule, and sometimes a philosophy that is not yours. Neither path is morally superior. They are different bosses. Pick the boss you can stand.

If you want the academic core while you figure out the wrapper, start with courses. The affidavit does not teach your child to read. A phonics sequence does.
