Florida Homeschool: The Annual Evaluation Without a Show Binder

Florida is not Texas. You do file a notice of intent with the district. You do an annual evaluation. Families who moved from a no-notice state feel ambushed. Families who came from New York sometimes feel unsupervised. Both can follow the Florida statute and have a fine year.

Notice of intent

File when you start, within the window the statute describes. Put the district's address in your password manager so you are not hunting it on day 29. If you move counties, you are not done. You file again.

Evaluation is a menu, not a vibe

Florida lets you use a certified teacher evaluation of a portfolio, or certain tests, among the listed options. Pick one in September, not in May. May is when the good evaluators are full and you are desperate.

A portfolio a teacher can evaluate in an hour:

• Attendance log
• Book list
• Maths samples across the year, not only the pretty ones
• Writing samples with dates
• A one-page description of science and social studies
• Quiz or lesson exports if you used an app

No die-cuts. No 12-tab system you will hate in February.

What evaluators mutter in the car afterwards

They remember the child who could talk about a book and show the work. They forget the binder with 90 colour-printed cover pages. Be the first child.
