Screen Time and Homeschool Apps: Where We Draw the Line

A father in Manchester wrote that his son "does homeschool" from 10 until 2 and it turned out to be Minecraft with the education DLC and a nature documentary. I do not hate Minecraft. I hate lying to yourself with the word curriculum.

Paediatric guidance in the US and UK still treats open-ended entertainment screens differently from a short, goal-directed task with an adult nearby. That distinction is the whole article.

A lesson is a closed loop

Open app. Do the next maths lesson. Write the answers. See what was wrong. Close app. Total time: 15 to 25 minutes. That is a tool.

Open app. Wander. Watch a "fun facts" autoplay. Argue about the iPad. Ninety minutes. That is not a tool. That is the afternoon disappearing.

Caps that survive a toddler

• Academic screens: the lessons you meant to do. Often under an hour a day for primary.
• Entertainment screens: a family rule you can say out loud at 5pm without a court case.
• Do not count your own work Zoom as the child's screen diet. Different stomachs.

If a younger sibling is watching the Grade 2 lesson from the floor, that is not extra pedagogy. That is a small person in the room. Hand them blocks.

What the 2026 trend cycle will say

There will be another round of headlines about phones in schools. Homeschoolers will use those headlines to feel smug or panicked. Neither is a timetable. Put the academic screen inside a lesson. Put the rest of the day in a kitchen, a park, a book, a piano with missing notes.

If you want the loop without the feed, start with a maths course and set a timer. When the timer ends, the lesson ends even if the child wants "one more." Wanting one more is a compliment. It is also how you blow the afternoon.
