The 90-Minute Homeschool Morning for Parents Who Have a Job

The Pinterest timetable has nature study at 2:15. The parent who emailed me had a stand-up at 2:00. Something had to lose. It should not be the child's reading, and it should not always be the parent's job.

A homeschool day is not a school day with different furniture. It is a few hours of instruction plus a life. Working parents only get this to work if they cut the performance.

The 90 minutes

• 20 minutes maths, including a two-minute warm-up
• 25 minutes reading or phonics, depending on age
• 10 minutes writing or spelling
• 15 minutes of the one extra thing you will actually do this term (science, history, a language)
• 20 minutes of slack, because someone will spill milk

Do this five mornings a week if you can. Four if one morning is a clinic. Tick the days. That is a year.

What gets dropped first, on purpose

Handwriting curricula with 40 steps. Unit studies that need a trip to a craft shop. "Morning time" playlists that take 35 minutes before anyone has opened a book. Lovely in a different season.

Where the app earns its keep
